ABOUT FACINGS
Facings are one kind of construction finish for the free or "raw" edges of a garment. Other finishes are hems and bindings.
Garment edges that may be faced include:
• Necklines• Sleeveless armholes• Buttonhole closures• End of sleeves• Skirts that have been let down and are too short to hem•Collars (facing is called the undercollar)• Pockets and pocket flaps
Facings usually are placed on the inside of the garment so they are not visible from the outside. They may be on the outside, however, if they serve as a decorative feature as well as an edge finish. When the garment is made of a heavy or rough fabric, the facing should be made of a smooth, thin fabric, such as a lining fabric, to reduce bulk and to improve feel.When the garment is made of thin fabric, the facing can be made of a firmer fabric, such as taffeta, to give body.
