Introduction to Hand Sewing or the Art of Couture.

Hand sewing is very important in couture ateliers. Most of the ateliers have technicians working on garments by hand on tables with no sewing machines. In part, this is a reflection of tradition in Europe, where many of the most famous couture houses are located.

Couture technicians use hand stitches to control the entire construction of the designed garment. Sewing by hand enables you to sew on the right side of the garment to add designs; it also allows you to get into many areas that a sewing machine can never reach, such as small corners of designed pockets, fabric overlays, and much more. When working with very thin, soft fabrics, it is much better to work with hand stitching because it does not leave marks a sewing machine seam does; if mistakes are made, you can easily take out the seams without ruining the fabric.

Fullness should be eased in and distributed evenly for a flat, smooth finish. Hem stitches should also be spaced evenly and not visible on the right side of the garment. Choose stitches that are appropriate for your garment and fabric.
